The Ultimate Three-Day Cornwall Road Trip

Planning the ultimate Cornish road trip isn’t easy – especially when you’ve got just three days to do it! With so much to see, how do you make the most of every moment, and create unforgettable memories at the same time?

Don’t worry, we’re here to help; whether you’re staying in accommodation, camping or simply winging it, we’ve pulled together our expert guide to your long weekend in Cornwall. Happy planning!

Day 1: Exploring the North Coast

For us, day one is all about hitting the north coast, where you’ll find miles of dramatic coastline, moorlands and ancient forests.

To kick off your day, start bright and early with a morning stroll at Fistral Beach, Newquay. It’s the perfect time to dip your toes in before the crowds amass, and you could even get a little adventurous at this famous wave spot with a surf lesson. Just steps from the beach, you’ll also discover a vibrant town stuffed with bustling brunch spots (remember to check out our sister venue, Lewinnick Lodge, for stunning cliff-side views!).

Later, hit the road and spend your afternoon in Padstow, a charming fishing port around 30 minutes by car from Newquay. Here, you’ll find some of the county’s most celebrated restaurants, from Paul Ainsworth’s No6 to Rick Stein’s Cafe. With soft, white sand beaches just a short walk from the harbour, it’s an idyllic spot to while the afternoon away.

Before switching off after a packed day, catch the sunset from the cliffs of Bedruthan Steps on your way back – you won’t regret it.

For those with a little more time, a little further north and you’ll find other top spots including Tintagel Castle, the legendary birth place of King Arthur, and the historic harbour of Boscastle.

Day 2: Coastal Adventures and Historic Sites

Your second day is all about heading west. West Cornwall is well-known for its ancient sites, rugged scenery and mining heritage, and some say it has a magic like nowhere else in the county.

Your day will start in St Ives, a picturesque seaside town bursting with art galleries and surrounded by some of Cornwall’s best beaches. It’s also home to the iconic Tate St Ives, a modern art gallery that celebrates artists with links to this area and local landscape. With quaint cafes and bakeries to boot, you’ll have no problem finding a mid-morning snack (just beware the infamous seagulls!).

Your afternoon plans could be spent one of two ways – driving further west to explore the awe-inspiring Tin Coast, including the Botallack and Geevor Tin Mines, or heading south to Marazion, where you’ll find the world-famous St Michael’s Mount.

With a causeway only accessible at low tide, you’ll want to time your visit to this castle-in-the-sea right (don’t worry if you miss it, though; a boat makes this small island accessible all day). The Mount is also recognised for some of Cornwall’s best gardens, and food options can be found at both the Island Café and the Godolphin Arms, which overlooks the castle from the mainland.

Day 3: The Lizard Peninsula

Your final day in Cornwall ends on the Lizard Peninsula, with some of Cornwall’s most beloved beauty spots, including Kynance Cove.

Famed for its turquoise seas, white sand and rock stacks, this cove draws visitors from across Cornwall and beyond, so stop by early to claim a space. With a small café, it’s a ideal spot to grab breakfast before getting your walking boots on – and, you’ll need them!

That’s because, from here, you have the perfect opportunity to hike the South West Coast Path to Lizard Point (Britain’s most southerly point). The walk is about an hour and you’ll see some of the county’s most jaw-dropping scenery along the way. At Lizard Point, explore the lighthouse and heritage centre, before stopping in at Polpeor Café for a homemade donut topped with jam and clotted cream.

Your day ends with a 35-minute drive to Falmouth, where the lively harbour and cobbled streets boast a myriad of restaurants, cocktails and bars to finish off your ultimate Cornish road trip!

Our final tip: Location, location, location

For us, making the most of Cornwall is all about location. Here at The Plume, we’re lucky to be nestled in the heart of Cornwall, with easy access to the county’s main link road, giving our guests the chance to explore almost every corner of the county in just a few days.
