Our favourite woodland walks in Cornwall

Cornwall may be known for its stunning coastlines, but it also boasts some of the most enchanting woodlands in the country. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker, a casual walker, or just looking for the perfect place to enjoy nature with your dog, we can guarantee there’s a walk for every level and accessibility need.

Here are some of our favourite woodland walks in Cornwall that promise breathtaking scenery, peaceful surroundings, and plenty of adventure.

Laddock Woods

Laddock Woods is a hidden gem nestled between Truro and St Austell (and just minutes from our doorstep here at The Plume!). Explore a network of trails, perfect for walkers of all abilities. You’ll be surrounded by a variety of trees, from tall conifers to more native species, like chestnut, beech, and lime.

Historic sites here include the likes of the Holy Well of St Laddock. You can also wander by the river, where a gold nugget was discovered in 1802 – enough to create a necklace now displayed at the Cornwall Museum in Truro!

Cardinham Woods

One of the most popular woodlands in Cornwall is Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin. Known for its hiking and biking trails (ranging from short loops to longer, more challenging ones), these woods draw adventurers from across the county.

Historical features, like old mine workings, add to the charm of these woodlands, while a lovely café offers the chance to enjoy a well-earned cup of coffee and cake after your walk.

Tehidy Woods

Located on the north coast between Portreath and Godrevy, Tehidy Woods is the largest area of woodland in West Cornwall. With more than nine miles of trails, there’s plenty to explore in these woodlands.

Home to a variety of wildlife, from squirrels to a wide range of bird species, it’s the perfect spot to take a picnic and enjoy the nature around you. Tehidy is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden and red, while regular family events happen throughout the seasons as part of the Rogue Theatre’s ongoing roster.

Luxulyan Valley

Luxulyan Valley is a place steeped in history and natural beauty, found near St Austell. This World Heritage Site is known for its lush greenery, winding trails, and remnants of Cornwall’s rich industrial past.

As you walk through the valley, you’ll come across the iconic Treffry Viaduct, a historic structure built between 1839 and 1842 – the first significant civil engineering project of its kind in Cornwall. The mix of ancient woodlands, gushing streams, and industrial ruins make Luxulyan Valley one of the most memorable walks to experience in Cornwall.

How to prep for your woodland walk

Before heading out on your woodland adventure – whether alone or with your furry friend – it pays to be prepared! Here are some essentials to bring with you:

  • Sturdy footwear – Many woodland paths can get muddy, especially after rain and mizzle, so wear comfortable, waterproof shoes.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing – Cornwall’s weather can change fast, so bring layers, a waterproof jacket, and a hat or gloves if needed. In summer, don’t forget to bring your sun protection, too!
  • A map or GPS device – Some woodland areas have multiple trails, so it’s handy to have a map to avoid getting lost. We recommend downloading what3words in case you need help in an emergency.
  • Water and snacks – Even on short walks, staying hydrated and having a snack on hand is always a good idea (and who doesn’t love a tasty trail mix?!).
  • Dog essentials – If you’re bringing your four-pawed pal, pack water for them, as well as a lead, poop bags, and maybe some treats. Just be wary to keep dogs on leads around old industrial machinery for safety.
  • Camera or binoculars – Cornwall is full of diverse wildlife, and you never know what you might come across. Keep your eyes peeled at all times!
