Four ways we’re making the most of Cornwall this winter

The nights are rolling in a little earlier, and the crowds are gone – but there are still so many reasons to visit Cornwall this winter.

In fact, Cornwall in the off-season offers a magical respite from the hustle and bustle of summer, giving you the chance to explore at your own pace. That’s why we’ve highlighted our top four ways to make the most of the county in the colder months, come rain or shine.

Take a wintery coastal walk

Is there anything quite like a cold, brisk walk on the coast path, followed by a warming wine at the local pub? Exploring the South West Coast Path when you visit Cornwall this winter is a perfect opportunity to soak up the rustic beauty of the county’s cliffs and beaches, without the summer crowds.

Whether you’re a hardened hiker or a whimsical wanderer, the Cornish landscape boasts all types of terrain to explore, from the rolling moorlands of Bodmin and west Cornwall, to the dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches of the north coast, or the less strenuous (but no less scenic) Camel Trail and local woodlands.

With options to suit every explorer, winter walks offer the chance to see Cornwall’s natural beauty in a new light (plus, there’s no better time to visit with your pup!).

Join the Bonfire Night celebrations

Bonfire Night events are lighting up Cornwall this November, offering plenty of family-friendly fun with a dazzling display of fireworks and roaring bonfires. It’s a great way to experience true Cornish community spirit, and just one of the many celebrations to happen throughout the winter months! Plus, whether you want an ocean back-drop or easy access for a post-firework pint, there’s plenty of options to choose from.

Here at The Plume, you can join our crew from 5pm on Tuesday, 5th November, for marshmallow roasting, music, sparklers and our outside bar. Tickets are £5 per adult (free entry for children), with fireworks lighting up from 6pm.

These events are a brilliant way to make the most of your visit to Cornwall this winter, helping you get right to the heart of community life as you enjoy the crisp Cornish air under the glow of fireworks.

Visit Cornwall’s indoor attractions

While most of us locals are used to the Cornish mizzle, we know sometimes you might need an escape from the outdoor activities – and, fortunately, Cornwall is jam-packed with exciting attractions.

The world-famous Eden Project, with its tropical biomes, is a winter favourite. Here, you can enjoy seasonal events, like ice skating and Christmas markets, that transform the attraction into a festive wonderland. Or why not check out Bodmin Jail? The historic former prison, based on the edge of the moors, offers an insight into the rich and darkly fascinating legacy of Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment, with an immersive experience for all ages.

And let’s not forget the numerous galleries and museums to explore! From the iconic Tate St Ives, where you can find exhibitions about some of the region’s most celebrated artists, to the Maritime Museum Cornwall, celebrating life on the high seas, there are plenty of ways to explore Cornwall’s unique heritage and creativity – no matter the weather.

Experience the magic of Christmas lights and markets

Nothing kicks off the festive spirit quite like a Christmas light switch-on, and Cornwall’s towns and villages are often transformed with twinkling lights and festive decorations that bring warmth to the winter nights.

To really feel festive magic, head to the festive firework display in Newquay on 29th November, or watch Santa arrive by lifeboat in St Ives on 2nd December. Elsewhere, Truro’s Christmas lights add a sparkle to the historic city from 22nd November, while you can enjoy the floating Mousehole Harbour Lights from 12th December.

Throughout November and December, you’ll also have the chance to explore the many Christmas markets happening across Cornwall, showcasing the county’s best artisan makers and local produce. From hand-crafted gifts to delicious treats, there’s something for everyone. Our top market highlights include the Fowey Christmas Market, Healey’s Christmas Market (near Truro) and the Cornwall Christmas Fair at the Eden Project.
