Cornwall’s best art galleries and creative workshops

It’s no secret that Cornwall has long been a magnet for artists and makers over the centuries; the combination of quality light, rugged landscapes and coastal atmosphere having inspired generations of artists. And today? That means the region boasts a packed arts scene, making it an important creative hub in the UK.

From contemporary galleries overlooking the sea to hands-on pottery and glass workshops, you’ll find art and creativity in almost every corner of the county (the ideal getaway for culture lovers!). Here, we’re sharing some of Cornwall best art galleries and highlights, and how to make the most of them on your visit.

Tate St Ives

Overlooking Porthmeor Beach, Tate St Ives is one of the most iconic galleries in Cornwall, having established itself with some of the biggest names in the region.

With a focus on modern art, the unusual building showcases contemporary exhibitions alongside works connected to the famous St Ives artistic movement. Inside, you’ll discover paintings, sculptures and installations inspired by Cornwall’s landscapes and creative heritage.

The gallery is also connected with the Barbara Hepworth Museum (you can purchase joint tickets to do both in one day), where you can explore Hepworth’s sculpture garden. Many of the sculptures remain in the same place she put them herself, with help from friend and composer Priaulx Rainier.

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange PZ

Located in the heart of Newlyn, Newlyn Art Gallery is part of an educational arts charity, where visitors can enjoy changing exhibitions featuring regional, national, and international artists.

With a vibrant calendar of events, workshops, and educational opportunities, there are also plenty of ways to get artistic yourself, while making the most of the welcoming creative atmosphere (and the tasty treats in the ocean-facing café).

Its sister venue in nearby Penzance, The Exchange PZ, also offers large-scale exhibitions, installations, and cultural events throughout the year.

Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens

Set within a subtropical valley near Penzance, Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens is home to contemporary sculptures by internationally-recognised artists, each surrounded by exotic planting and boasting panoramic views towards St Michael’s Mount.

The winding paths, outdoor artworks, and peaceful setting make this one of the most memorable gallery experiences in Cornwall. Make the most of a sunny afternoon here, with a celebrated kitchen, nursery, and shop to boot.
